White Hart Beach

The beach at White Hart sits on the west coast of Islay, a proper stretch of sand that catches the Atlantic light in a way that makes you forget how far north you actually are. It's not dramatic or showy - no towering cliffs or dramatic rock formations - just a long, quiet shoreline backed by low dunes and rough grass that bends in the wind.

What you get here is solitude and space. The sand is dark and firm, good for walking, and the water's the colour of strong tea when the light's right. Beachcombers do well; I found sea glass and bits of driftwood scattered along the tide line. Families with young kids should know it's exposed and can get fairly choppy, so it's not ideal for paddling on every day. Serious walkers and photographers will find it rewarding, especially in the low light of winter or early spring when the beach feels almost primordial.

Getting there means driving out towards Port Askaig, and there's not much around it in terms of facilities - no ice cream vans or beach bars. That's rather the point. You'll need to allow a good half-day minimum if you're coming from Port Ellen or Bowmore. The nearest accommodation is Islay Glamping Pods, about 2.4 miles back towards Port Askaig, which would work nicely if you're planning a few days exploring the island's quieter western edges. It's the sort of beach that grows on you rather than impresses immediately.
