Carraig Fhada Lighthouse

The walk out to Carraig Fhada takes you across rocky terrain and past wind-buffeted grasses to a lighthouse that feels properly remote, even by Islay standards. It's a short but exposed trudge, so proper footwear matters - trainers will do if the weather's behaving, but one wrong step on wet rock and you're in trouble.

What you get at the end is the lighthouse itself, a sturdy Victorian structure that's been guiding boats around this southwestern corner of Islay since 1869. The views across to the other islands are genuinely striking, especially on a clear day when you can make out the Mull of Oa. The light still works - it's an active aid to navigation - so there's something satisfying about standing there knowing it's still doing its job after all this time.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the engineering, but honestly, most people come for the walk and the views rather than any interpretive materials or entry fees. It's free to visit, which is the only way this trip makes sense. You'll need an hour to an hour and a half from the car park depending on your pace and how long you linger.

This works well as a half-day excursion if you're based at Islay Glamping Pods - you're only a few miles away - or as a circuit combined with exploring Port Ellen and the nearby distilleries. The exposed setting means it's grim in heavy rain or winter gales, so spring and autumn tend to be the sweet spot.
