White Coomb

The walk up White Coomb from Moffat is proper Lowland scenery - rolling moorland that looks deceptively gentle until you're halfway up and the wind picks up. At 822 metres, it's not a monster, but the exposed plateau at the top makes it feel more serious than the height suggests. You get views across the Southern Uplands that stretch for miles on a clear day, and on a grey one it's all moody and atmospheric. The route from the Grey Mare's Tail car park (the waterfall's a bonus if you've got time) takes about three hours return, mostly on decent paths until the final push. It's walkers' terrain - proper boots recommended, not trainers. Families with older kids handle it fine, though younger ones will find the relentless climb tedious. The reward is being able to see into England on a good day, and the sense of having earned your lunch back in Moffat. If you're staying at Riverside Holiday Park nearby, this is exactly the kind of half-day outing that makes a Lowland holiday work - close enough to base camp, far enough away to feel like an achievement. Go early if possible; the cloud rolls in quick up here, and there's nothing to see if you're socked in.
