It's genuinely absorbing if you're into railways, though perhaps not the sort of place that'll hold restless toddlers for hours on end. Families with train enthusiasts in tow will find proper value here - there's usually a chance to clamber aboard actual locomotives and get a feel for what commuting looked like fifty years ago. The site sits just outside Sheffield, making it an easy afternoon detour if you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Ingfield Farm or High Lea Farm. Allow a couple of hours to walk round without rushing. Admission costs are reasonable, though I'd ring ahead to check current opening times - they can be a bit patchy depending on season. What makes it work is the hands-on approach. You're not just looking at things behind glass. The volunteers clearly know their stuff and will chat to you about the engines if you ask.
