Whisby Beach

The beach at Whisby doesn't exist in the traditional sense - what you've actually got here is a glacial lake turned nature reserve just outside Newark, where the water draws everyone from serious birdwatchers to families after a straightforward afternoon out. The beach bit refers to the sandy shoreline fringing the lake itself, which feels properly unexpected for Nottinghamshire. Walking the perimeter takes about an hour depending on how often you stop, and the water's too cold for swimming but fine for paddling if you're not fussy.

It's free to visit, which is the main draw beyond the novelty factor. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing - the reserve attracts waders and grebes depending on season. Kids can do the walk without complaint, though there's not masses to keep them occupied once you've done a lap. The car park fills quickly on weekends, so arrive early or accept a bit of a hike from the overflow.

Four Seasons Country Park is just four miles away, making Whisby a decent half-day add-on if you're based there. Don't expect drama or stunning views - the landscape is flat and the lake is murky. But it's the sort of place that works if you want to stretch your legs without overcommitting, and the walk itself is pleasant enough in dry weather. Muddy as hell when wet though, so check the forecast first.
