Slacks Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire isn't exactly dramatic, but that's rather the point. Slacks Hill rises to 423 feet near Newark, and on a clear day the flatness of the surrounding countryside makes it feel taller than it is. You can drive right up, or walk it if you're after a gentle climb with actual views instead of endless hedge-lined footpaths.

It's a working landscape rather than a tourist attraction - no car park, no signs, no cafe. Just farmland and the kind of horizon that stretches forever. Walkers and cyclists get the most from it because you're not really there for twenty minutes and done; you're there to appreciate how different the land becomes when you gain even modest height. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming after the drive, but dog walkers absolutely love it.

Free to visit, obviously. Twenty minutes to half an hour to look around properly. The nearest proper base is Newark, which gives you access to Camper UK Leisure Park and Four Seasons Country Park within easy reach if you're doing a touring holiday. It works well as a quick stop between other attractions rather than a destination in itself - the kind of place you visit on a whim and end up quite glad you did, mainly because there's no faffing about with admission fees or queues. Bring decent shoes for muddy edges after rain, and time it for late afternoon when the light turns golden across the fens.
