Whin Park

Whin Park is a proper nature reserve just outside Inverness, the sort of place where you can actually escape the tourist circuit for an hour or two. It's woodland and open moorland mixed together - nothing dramatic, but genuine Highland habitat where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky and keep your eyes peeled. The walking is straightforward enough, with paths that won't knacker you out but give you enough of a sense of having got somewhere.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Go Glamping at Loch Ness or Ardtower. It's the kind of reserve that rewards a slow amble rather than a rushed visit - you're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many paths you fancy. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the moorland sections attract some interesting species.

The reserve works well as a half-day break from holiday park life, close enough to Inverness that you're not burning fuel for the sake of it, but far enough removed that you feel like you've actually ventured somewhere. It's free to access, which is refreshing. Not the sort of place that'll dominate your Highland itinerary, but if you're based nearby at Bunchrew or Coulmore Bay, it's worth knowing about. Go early morning if you want any real chance of wildlife spotting - the reserves tend to come alive before the day heats up.
