Whelford Pool Nature Reserve

The water here is still and dark, ringed by reed beds that whisper when the wind picks up. Whelford Pool is a proper working nature reserve just outside Fairford, the sort of place where you come to actually see something rather than tick a box. It's a flooded gravel pit that's been left to do its thing, and over the years it's become a magnet for water birds, dragonflies, and the kind of peaceful silence you don't get often enough.

What you're doing is walking the perimeter on quiet paths, stopping at viewing points to spot whatever's about. Depending on the season you might see great crested grebes, gadwall, or if you're lucky and patient, a kingfisher darting between the reeds. The birdwatching here is genuinely worth the trip if you're into that sort of thing. Less rewarding if you're after a quick splash about or bright playground action.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours - you just turn up. Allow an hour to do a proper circuit, maybe longer if you've brought binoculars and a bird book. Best visited early morning when the light's good and the birds are active. Summer can feel a bit overgrown and mosquito-ridden if you're not keen on insects.

Great Farm is barely half a mile away, so if you're based there it's an easy morning's walk before heading elsewhere in the park. Second Chance is a bit further out, but still close enough for a dog walk or a quiet spell away from the caravan. Works well as part of a Cotswolds wandering trip - Fairford itself has a cracking church and the Thames nearby.
