Wheal Coates Tin Mine

The engine house at Wheal Coates sits on the cliff edge near Goonvrea like some Victorian sentinel keeping watch over the Atlantic. It's a proper dramatic setting - the stone building all weathered and sturdy, the kind of industrial archaeology that makes you stop and actually think about what went on here. This was a working tin mine, one of Cornwall's most productive during the 19th century, and you can still see the engine house and some of the mine infrastructure scattered across the clifftop.

It's free to wander around, which is the main draw. There's no visitor centre or interpretive boards to speak of, so this isn't the place for hand-holding explanations. What you get is the raw remains - stacks, shafts, and that striking engine house framed against the sea. Most people spend between 20 minutes to an hour here, depending on how much they want to poke around. The coastal path runs right through, so it works brilliantly as a walk break rather than a destination in itself.

Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding. There's something about standing next to industrial relics while the wind whips in from the ocean that makes history feel immediate and real. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse - children need either dramatic action or hands-on stuff to stay engaged, and Wheal Coates offers neither. But if you're camping or holidaying at Perran View or Wrinklers Wood nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive. Combine it with the coastal path and you've got a proper half-day outing.
