Wetheriggs Country Park

The old clay workings at Wetheriggs have been transformed into something rather special - a proper nature reserve where the industrial past and wildlife present sit alongside each other without much fuss. You get woodland trails threading through former extraction sites, wetland areas that have naturally colonised the old ponds, and grassland that's slowly rewilding itself. It's the sort of place where you might spot a heron by the water or warblers in the scrub, depending on the season.

Walkers will find it most rewarding, particularly those interested in how nature reclaims abandoned industrial land. It's not a manicured visitor experience - there are no facilities to speak of, no café, no gift shop. That's rather the point. The trails are manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the muddy sections frustrating after heavy rain. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you want to explore.

Located just outside Penrith, it works well as a quiet morning walk before heading into town for lunch, or as a break between visits to the Lake District proper. If you're staying at Lowther Holiday Park or Crossfells Campsite nearby, it's barely worth getting the car out for - a ten-minute drive at most. Best visited in spring or early summer when the bird life is most active and the wetland plants are putting on a show. Winter can feel a bit bleak, and the reserve is least interesting in the depths of summer when everything's dense green.
