Castlesteads

The ruins of a Roman fort sit quietly beside the River Irthing, a few miles south of Penrith. Castlesteads was built around AD 122 as part of Hadrian's Wall - not the wall itself, but one of the garrison forts that backed it up. What you find now are stone foundations, earthworks, and the satisfaction of standing where soldiers once stood nearly two thousand years ago.

It's not dramatic. There's no reconstructed gatehouse or museum on site - just the low remains of barracks, a bathhouse, and defensive ditches visible in the grass if you know what to look for. That's partly what makes it worthwhile. You won't queue here, and you get a proper sense of what archaeology actually looks like before the Heritage Centre treatment.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from a visit. The site is free and accessible year-round, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure - bring a decent guidebook or download information beforehand. Allow an hour to wander the site and take in the river valley setting. It's an easy side trip from Penrith, and fits well with a broader Hadrian's Wall tour if you're heading north.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Lowther Holiday Park is barely a mile away, or Crossfells Campsite at two miles - and you've got a proper Roman fort experience without the crowds of the bigger sites. Bring binoculars for the Irthing, which runs through a pleasant gorge here.
