Wether Hill

The walk up Wether Hill from Alnwick side takes you through proper Northumbrian moorland - heather rolling away in every direction once you're above the tree line. It's not high by Scottish standards, but the views across to the Cheviot ridge are worth the climb, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the border country.

This isn't a scramble or anything technical. Most walkers will manage the ascent without breaking a sweat, though the final approach does get a bit exposed if the wind's up. The real charm is in the solitude - you won't find crowds here like you might on more famous peaks. Bring a map though; the moorland navigation is straightforward but weather can turn quickly.

It's ideal for anyone staying at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just a couple of miles away. You could easily combine this with exploring the surrounding Cheviot foothills or heading into Alnwick proper for a change of pace. Most people allow three to four hours for a round trip including a breather at the top.

Families with younger legs might find the moorland a bit of a grind - there's not much to see until you're properly up - but older kids and serious walkers will find it rewarding. The descent's where you'll notice your knees, so take it steady on the way down.
