The Westgate Street Brick Project is a gallery run by actual artists, and you can tell the moment you walk in - the work on display has been chosen because someone cares about it, not because it ticks boxes. The space itself is small and intimate, which means you won't spend four hours wandering around getting art fatigue.

The exhibitions change regularly, so it's worth checking what's on before you make the trip. Local work features heavily, which if you're into discovering what the regional art scene is actually doing rather than what London galleries reckon matters, is genuinely worth your time. It's the kind of place where you might actually chat to the artists if you're there at the right moment.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - The Glamping Orchard and Severnside Boat & Caravan Park both get top marks - the Brick Project makes for a cracking afternoon activity between walks and the usual campsite mucking about. Gloucester itself has plenty more to explore beyond the gallery, so this fits neatly into a longer visit rather than being a destination in itself.
