Westfield Wood

The woodland around Aylesford rewards a proper wander, especially if you're based at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just five miles away. Westfield Wood itself is one of those quiet patches of Kent that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is precisely why it works so well.

It's a straightforward forest walk - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to escape the feeling of being herded. The wood offers nothing fancy: no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, just trees and air and the occasional patch of decent light filtering through. That's the appeal.

Family groups will find it decent for a couple of hours, though younger children might find the lack of play equipment a bit thin. It's really a walker's wood - the kind of place where you work up an appetite and feel genuinely away from things, despite being in South East England. Autumn is probably the best bet, when the leaf colour does half the work for you.

Being free and unstaffed means you turn up when you fancy and get on with it. There's a bit of muddy potential after rain, so proper boots are sensible. Combined with the Bearsted site as a base, you've got a decent morning sorted without much planning. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what a local wood should be - useful, accessible, and honest.
