Westend Moss

Westend Moss is a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll, rising above the moorland that sprawls across this corner of Lancashire near Holmfirth. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no rocky outcrops or cairn to stand on - but the views across the Pennines make the effort worthwhile, especially on a clear day when you can pick out ridges stretching for miles.

This is walkers' terrain, not a family afternoon out. The approach involves boggy ground and steep sections that'll have you working for it, so come prepared with decent boots and weather-appropriate kit. Allow a couple of hours for a round trip depending on your fitness and which route you take from the surrounding valleys.

The real appeal is that sense of solitude you get up here. It's not a honeypot destination - you won't queue for views or fight crowds for photos. That's both the charm and the drawback: there's no infrastructure, no café, nothing but moorland and your own legs.

If you're camping nearby at Whitegate or Dovestone, Westend Moss works as a morning walk before you head elsewhere. The Holmfirth area itself has decent walking infrastructure, so you could combine this with other local peaks. Worth doing if you're already in the area and the weather plays ball. On a grey, drizzly day though - which Lancashire can throw at you without warning - it's rather bleak and unrewarding.
