Westburton Hill

The walk up Westburton Hill takes about forty minutes from the village car park, and it's one of those rare Sussex climbs that actually feels like proper climbing. You're looking at maybe 600 feet of elevation, which doesn't sound much until you're halfway up a steep chalk track with the South Downs rolling away behind you. The summit itself is modest - a grassy plateau rather than a dramatic peak - but the views across the Arun Valley towards Arundel Castle are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can see right across to the Weald.

This is walker's territory, not a casual stroll. Families with younger kids might struggle with the gradient, though older ones who enjoy a proper hike will find it rewarding. The South Downs Way runs through the area, so you can link it with other walks if you've got the legs for it. Bring decent boots; the chalk can be slippery when wet, and there's not much shelter up top.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill - and there's no admission or specific opening hours to worry about. Allow two hours return if you're not in a hurry. If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Wakestone & Wild Glamping or Camp and Touring at Old Farm Slindon, Westburton makes a cracking half-day outing. Arundel itself is just four miles away, so you could combine it with a look around the town and castle. Good spot for a packed lunch if the weather plays ball.
