West Woods

Three hundred acres of beech and oak woodland stretching across the Wiltshire chalk downs - West Woods feels properly wild despite being just outside Marlborough. You're walking through ancient forest here, the sort of place where the canopy gets so thick in summer that the light turns green.

There's a network of paths threading through, ranging from gentle strolls to proper leg-burners up and down the hangers. The woodland floor in spring erupts with bluebells, which alone makes the trip worthwhile if you time it right. Summer's quieter but atmospheric; autumn turns the whole place copper and gold.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not a destination with facilities or attractions - there's no café, no playground, no visitor centre. What you get is genuine woodland and fresh air. Families with young children might find an hour enough before restlessness kicks in; proper rambling types could spend half a day here.

It's free to access and there's parking near the main entrance. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to do a decent circular route rather than just the obvious loops.

If you're based at Ridgeway Campsite, Hillview Park, or Totteridge Farm just down the road, West Woods is an obvious add-on for a morning walk. It pairs well with a Marlborough high street wander for lunch, and the chalk downland setting connects nicely with the broader Wiltshire walking circuit. Worth the trip if woodland and solitude appeal more than attractions and queues.
