Giant's Grave

The walk up to Giant's Grave, just outside Marlborough, is a decent hill climb with proper views at the top. The peak itself isn't massive - you're looking at around 800 feet - but the Wiltshire downland rolls away beneath you in all directions, which makes the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you can see for miles across chalk grassland that feels genuinely remote, despite being minutes from town.

It's a straightforward walk from Marlborough, mostly on marked paths, and takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on pace. The summit has the usual stone marker and a trig point. Worth noting: there's nothing elaborate here. No facilities, no café, no visitor centre. This is proper countryside walking, which is exactly why people come.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without much payoff at the end - it's not a castle or a visitor attraction, just open space and views. Walkers and anyone after a proper leg-stretch will absolutely get on with it. The Wiltshire chalk country is quietly beautiful, and this walk sits within some of the best walking terrain in the county.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Hillview Park is less than a mile away - it's an obvious morning walk. Ridgeway Campsite, a couple of miles further out, also puts you within easy reach. Both give you a proper base for exploring the local downland without feeling like you're tied to a seaside resort vibe.
