Long Barrow

Walking up to a Neolithic long barrow is like stepping into someone's 5,000-year-old family tomb - because that's essentially what it is. Historically minded adults will absolutely get this. Kids under ten might find it boring after five minutes - it's not Stonehenge. Walkers love these sites because they usually sit on good footpaths across open downland with proper views. If you're camping at Ridgeway Campsite or Hillview Park near Marlborough, it's worth a morning detour to understand what people were doing here before the Romans arrived.

Access is generally free and unrestricted - these are mostly on open land or accessible via footpaths. There's no visitor infrastructure, so bring decent shoes and don't expect facilities. Go when the chalk is dry. Winter mud makes these things thoroughly miserable.
