West View Park

The moorland around Elland opens up properly when you reach West View Park, a nature reserve that feels properly wild despite being within striking distance of town. You're looking at rough grassland, heather in season, and views that stretch across the Calderdale valleys - the sort of place where you can actually breathe without hearing a car engine.

It's walker territory, no question about it. The paths aren't manicured or signed to death, which is partly the appeal. You can spend an hour here or half a day, depending on mood and fitness. Spring and early summer are cracking times to visit when the heather's coming through and the place is quieter than the established beauty spots everyone floods to. Photographers will find genuine angles here rather than the postcard clichés.

Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will get on fine. Younger ones might find it a bit sparse - there's no playground or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

If you're based at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, West View makes an easy morning out before exploring the villages proper. Old Chamber Camping is equally close. Neither are long drives away, so you can use it as a breathing space between more structured attractions rather than your whole day's plan.
