West Stow Anglo Saxon Village

Walking round West Stow feels like stepping backwards 1,500 years without the time machine. This is a proper archaeological reconstruction - not a fancy museum, but actual buildings based on what diggers found buried here: timber halls, workshops, even a blacksmith's forge, all built using Anglo-Saxon methods. You get to poke about inside them, which beats reading about it in a textbook by miles.

The site sits just outside Bury, on the edge of the Breckland landscape, and it's genuinely instructive without feeling like homework. Kids tend to love the hands-on angle - they can see how people actually lived, what their homes looked like, where they cooked. Adults interested in dark ages history will find plenty to occupy an hour or two. The reconstructions are based on proper archaeological evidence, so you're not just looking at some theme park fantasy.

You'll want to allow a couple of hours to do it justice, longer if you're the type who reads every interpretation board. It's free entry, which is brilliant, though donations help keep the place running. Best visited outside school holidays if you want a bit of peace - summer weekends can get rammed with family groups.

Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park is practically on the doorstep, just a short walk away, making this an easy morning visit before heading elsewhere. The Breckland region has plenty of walking and cycling round those sandy heaths, so you could easily combine it with outdoor time.
