Den Building

Kids dragging branches and mud back to the car is pretty much the whole point here. Den Building, just east of Bury in Suffolk, is one of those wonderfully simple outdoor spaces where children actually use their imagination instead of demanding wifi. There's not much to it - woodland, clearings, and the freedom to build shelters from fallen wood and whatever else you can find. No structured activities, no staff telling you what to do. Just space.

Families with primary-school-age children will get the most from it. Teenagers will find it a bit dull unless they're genuinely outdoorsy, and toddlers need close watching near the building materials. Allow an hour or two depending on how ambitious your lot gets. The beauty is there's no pressure - you can potter about for twenty minutes or stay half the day.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Willow Grove Farm Glamping is excellent and only five miles away, or Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park if you want top-tier facilities - Den Building makes a solid half-day activity. It's the sort of place that tires kids out properly, the kind where they actually sleep at bedtime. Not Instagram-worthy. Absolutely worth the detour.
