The Drop

A 65-foot chalk cliff rising abruptly from the River Lark east of Bury - that's The Drop. It's the sort of local landmark that doesn't make the guidebooks but absolutely should. The sheer white face is genuinely impressive, carved out by water erosion over centuries, and it's become something of a magnet for walkers following the Lark Valley Path.

You get the full impact walking along the riverside. The contrast between the drop itself and the flat Suffolk landscape around it is what makes it work - there's nowhere else quite like it in this part of the world. Fair warning though: it's not a destination where you'll spend hours. Twenty minutes to half an hour at the top, maybe the same walking to get there, and you've seen what there is to see. Kids will find it interesting enough, but boredom might kick in quickly if you're not combining it with other walks in the area.

The real value is threading it into a longer route. You're well placed staying at any of the nearby parks - Willow Grove Farm Glamping, Kings Forest Caravan & Camping Park, or West Stow Pods are all within six miles - to explore the whole Lark Valley. It's a proper walking country, and The Drop makes a satisfying focal point on a ramble rather than a standalone trip.

Access is free, obviously. Just park sensibly near Bury and walk in. Spring and autumn are best - fewer midges, and the light sits nicely on that chalk face.
