West Park, Long Eaton

What you're looking at is reclaimed industrial land that's transformed into wetland and grassland habitat, complete with observation points and walking trails that actually reward the effort.

It's genuinely brilliant for birdwatchers and anyone who wants to spot something other than pigeons without driving hours into the Pennines. The reserve is quiet enough that you might see kingfishers, reed warblers, and various raptors if you time it right - dawn visits are your best bet. Families will find the walking accessible rather than demanding, though younger children might lose interest unless they're already into spotting things through binoculars.

The whole visit typically takes two to three hours if you're doing it properly, longer if you're serious about the wildlife. Free to enter, which is always a bonus. It works well as a morning outing before heading to one of the nearby glamping spots like Meadow View, which is under three miles away - you could easily combine it with a stroll around Ilkeston's older quarters or the River Erewash towpath. Winter sees migratory birds arrive, but summer's when the reserve comes alive with breeding activity and the reserve actually manages decent water levels. Best visited on a weekday when it's quieter; weekends can draw casual walkers who don't read the wildlife notices.
