West Park Local Nature Reserve

The wetland paths at West Park fold through reed beds and open water where you'll spot herons standing motionless in the shallows, waiting. It's a proper local spot just outside Lewes, the kind of place where Sussex residents come to watch birds without fuss or crowds.

You can walk the reserve freely - there's no entrance fee and no gates stopping you. Allow an hour if you're moving slowly with binoculars, half that if you're just stretching your legs. The main path is manageable underfoot, though it gets boggy after rain, so decent shoes matter.

Birders will love it. The reserve pulls in winter visitors - teal, shoveler, tufted duck - and in spring you'll hear warblers in the scrub. If you're not bothered about identification, it's still a nice escape: quiet water, open sky, the kind of walk that doesn't demand much but gives back a bit of peace.

The Secret Campsite and Wild Boar Wood are both within spitting distance, making this a solid half-morning outing if you're based at either. It won't blow your mind if you're after dramatic landscapes, but it's worth the short drive from Lewes if you've got an afternoon free and want to see what Sussex's working wetlands actually look like. Go early if you want the best light and the fewest interruptions.
