Anne of Cleves House Museum

The Tudor house where Anne of Cleves actually lived after Henry VIII divorced her sits on a quiet street in Lewes, and it's genuinely affecting to stand in those rooms. She got the better deal, frankly - while the other wives were losing their heads, Anne negotiated a decent settlement and spent her final years here in relative peace. The museum does a solid job of explaining who she was beyond the "she was ugly" narrative that's dogged her for five centuries.

Inside you'll find period furniture, Tudor artifacts, and displays that walk you through her marriage, divorce, and life after Henry. It's not enormous - you can see it properly in about an hour - but the spaces feel lived-in rather than sterile. The kitchen and bedchamber give you a real sense of domestic Tudor life, which beats any number of grand palaces.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, though casual visitors might feel it's a touch specialist. Kids usually lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're already hooked on Tudors. Lewes itself is worth a day though - there's the castle, the High Street has proper independent shops, and the whole town hums with character.
