West Lake

The water at West Lake sits surprisingly still most mornings, which makes the whole spot feel rather meditative if you arrive early enough to beat the crowds. It's a modest freshwater lake near Sevenoaks in Kent - nothing grand, but genuinely worth a detour if you're staying in the area or passing through on a park holiday.

You can walk the perimeter, which takes a comfortable hour or so depending on your pace. The paths are decent underfoot, though they get muddy after rain. Birdwatchers absolutely swear by it here - cormorants, herons, and various ducks are regular sightings. Bring binoculars if that's your thing. Families won't be bored, but don't expect fairgrounds or facilities; it's about the peace and the water itself.

The lake sits well within reach of Thriftwood Country Park, about five and a half miles away, so it works nicely as a morning or afternoon leg of a broader Kent holiday. The combination gives you both the park amenities and access to proper nature without having to travel far.

There's no obvious entrance fee that I could confirm, and it's freely accessible during daylight. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends draw families and joggers, which isn't bad exactly, but the reflective quality of the place is best appreciated when it's quieter. Bring a flask. Wear proper shoes. You'll spend two or three hours here if you're thorough, though an hour suffices if you're just passing.
