Knockmill Wood

The woodland around Knockmill, just outside Sevenoaks, is proper Kent - dense, dark in places, and full of the sort of ancient footpaths that make you wonder what's been walking them for centuries. It's not a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and interpretation boards. This is the real deal: mature trees, plenty of undergrowth, and the kind of quiet you only get when you're genuinely away from the main roads.

You're looking at a solid woodland walk rather than a destination attraction. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the ground gets churned up and muddy in patches. Families with kids aged seven upwards will get the most from it; younger ones might struggle with the uneven terrain and lack of facilities. The woodland works brilliantly if you're staying at Thriftwood Country Park just 1.3 miles away, or any of the other caravan sites within striking distance. It breaks up a park holiday nicely without needing tickets or timetables.

Allow two to three hours for a decent walk, longer if you're meandering and stopping to look at things. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets a bit thick and close, and winter can be genuinely slippery. There's no visitor information readily available online, which is rather refreshing actually. You just turn up, park sensibly, and use your common sense.

Honestly? If you're keen on woodland walks and staying locally, it's worth the trip. If you want something with more structure or facilities, you might feel a bit let down.
