West Lake

Water stretches out calm and reflective on the outskirts of Nottingham, surrounded by woodland that gives the whole place a sense of proper seclusion despite being barely five miles from the city centre. West Lake is one of those spots locals know about and visitors often miss - a body of water that works equally well for a quick walk round the perimeter or a longer afternoon if you've got time to kill.

The lake itself is the draw here. You get decent views across the water, woodland paths that aren't too demanding, and enough space to actually breathe without tripping over someone's rucksack. Families with young children will manage it fine - the walks are gentle and there's enough to look at without needing much narrative explaining. Birdwatchers show up regularly, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Joggers come through too, which tells you the paths are well-maintained.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping sites - Peacock Lake, Birdholme, or Wolds Wine Estate are all within six miles - West Lake makes for a straightforward morning or early evening outing without needing a car journey to somewhere more famous. It's not dramatic or particularly photogenic, but that's rather the point. You won't find crowds or concessions stands, just water and trees and the chance to stretch your legs properly.

Best visited on a weekday if you can manage it. Weekends see more foot traffic, which changes the mood slightly.
