West Kingsdown Windmill

You'll spot this brick tower from the road long before you reach it - a proper standalone windmill sitting above the village of West Kingsdown, just south of Sevenoaks. It's the kind of structure that makes you pull over, even if you're not usually bothered with industrial heritage.

The windmill itself is unmissable from a distance, but getting right up to it depends on what's currently open to the public - visitor access varies, and there's no guarantee you can go inside. That said, the exterior alone is worth photographing, and the setting on higher ground gives decent views across the Kent countryside. It's the sort of thing that takes twenty minutes if you're just passing through, or longer if you're the type to sit about reading historical plaques.

This works best as a quick stop rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Gatehouse Wood Country Park nearby - a solid four-star setup just a few miles away - it's an easy detour during an afternoon drive. History enthusiasts will appreciate the industrial angle, and photographers might linger longer, but families with young kids won't find much to occupy them for long.

Check ahead before you visit about opening hours and access. The road isn't complicated, and parking is generally fine in the immediate area. Worth the stop if you're in the region, but don't rearrange your day around it.
