West House Wood

The woodland around West House Wood, just outside Colchester, is exactly the sort of place you'll want to wander into without much of a plan. Ancient trees, proper mossy undergrowth, the kind of quiet you don't get in towns. It's not vast - you can cover it in a couple of hours without breaking a sweat - but it feels properly isolated once you're in among the oaks and beeches.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with restless toddlers might find it a touch dull after half an hour, but older kids who actually enjoy being outside will love the chance to poke around, turn over logs, listen for birds. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, which is either lovely or muddy depending on the weather.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no obvious paths marked out in that corporate way. You just turn up and explore. It's free, or at least nobody will stop you. Go in autumn when the light filters through in that amber sort of way, or spring if you want to catch bluebells and new growth.

If you're staying at Colchester Country Park, just over a mile away, or camping at Rushbanks Farm a bit further out, West House Wood makes for a solid morning outing. It won't steal your entire day, but it's the kind of ramble that reminds you why you came to Essex in the first place - not for attractions, but for space and green things.
