Friday Wood

Ancient oak and hornbeam trees form a proper canopy overhead in this slice of old Essex woodland, just east of Colchester. Friday Wood feels like stepping back centuries - the sort of place where you half expect to bump into smugglers or poachers from another era.

Walking here is straightforward enough, with clear paths winding through the trees and plenty of spots where children can scramble about and build dens. Dog walkers love it for the freedom to let their pets off lead, though you'll want to keep an eye on them during pheasant season. The wood comes alive in spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor - genuinely lovely if you time it right.

Bird watchers do well here too. I've spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches and the occasional red kite circling overhead. The mixture of mature trees and cleared glades creates proper habitat diversity.

It's free to wander, obviously, and you could easily spend a couple of hours exploring the various tracks. Best avoided after heavy rain when the clay paths turn into a proper muddy mess. For families staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around West Mersea or Waldegraves, it makes a decent morning out when the beach gets a bit much. Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid woodland walk that feels authentically Essex rather than manicured for tourists.
