The entrance to Macclesfield Forest sits at the edge of open moorland where the Peak District starts to show its teeth. You'll find it via narrow lanes from Macclesfield town centre - there's a small car park and a scattering of information boards that'll give you the lay of the land. It's the jumping-off point for proper walking country rather than a destination in itself, but that's precisely why it works.

This is walker territory. The forest itself is a working woodland, mixed conifers and broadleaf, crisscrossed by footpaths that range from gentle strolls through the trees to more challenging moorland hikes. On a clear day you can push on to higher ground and get views across the Cheshire plain. The whole area feels less manicured than some Peak hotspots - it's proper countryside rather than a tourism carousel.

You'll want at least two hours minimum if you're doing more than a quick loop, though most people end up staying longer once they get going. Families with younger kids might stick to the lower trails; older children and keen walkers will find plenty to get stuck into. The moorland can be windswept and exposed, so check conditions before you head out.
