West Common

West Common is a proper nature reserve on Lincoln's doorstep, the kind of place locals have probably walked past a hundred times without really noticing it. It's open grassland and scrub - nothing flashy, but genuinely good for spotting birds and the occasional deer if you're quiet enough. The paths are straightforward and mostly flat, which makes it ideal if you've got restless kids or aging relatives in tow.

You're looking at an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're doing the full circuit and stopping to bird-watch. Walkers will find it decent for clearing the head; historians won't find much to grab onto here. The real appeal is the peace - it's green space without the manicured feel of a country park.

Being free and just a short drive from central Lincoln, it slots nicely into a caravan holiday. Hartsholme Country Park Campsite is barely two miles away, so you could easily combine a morning at West Common with a longer day at Hartsholme proper. South Cliff Caravan Site is equally close if you want to base yourselves there. Neither location will pin you to one spot - Lincoln itself has proper attractions, and you're well positioned for exploring the wider fens.

Best visited outside peak school holidays if you prefer the quiet. Spring and early autumn are genuinely lovely for spotting migrating birds.
