West Bay West Pier

The old pier at West Bay is less about what's actually there and more about what isn't anymore. Most of it collapsed decades ago, leaving just a short stretch of Victorian ironwork jutting into the water - a proper ghost of its former self. It's the kind of place where you understand why it mattered once, even if it's a bit melancholy now.

What you get is a decent walk along the seafront and a chance to stand on something genuinely historic, watching the waves lap underneath. On a clear day you can see across to the cliffs, and there's something oddly compelling about the remnants - rusty bolts, weathered timber, the works. Photographers might find it worth the detour; the decay has its own appeal. You're looking at ten minutes on the pier itself, then maybe another twenty pottering about the shingle beach.

It won't hold families for hours - kids get bored once they've walked to the end and back. But if you're into Victorian engineering, maritime history, or just fancy somewhere atmospheric for a cup of tea, it's worth the effort from Bridport. The beach huts nearby add colour, and the whole thing sits right next to Parkdean Resorts West Bay Holiday Park, so if you're staying nearby it's basically on your doorstep. Go at low tide if you can - you see more of the structure that way. Don't expect grandeur. Expect melancholy and a proper slice of English seaside decline.
