Bridport Museum

Bridport's small museum sits right in the heart of town and tells the story of how this place became famous for rope and net-making. Walk round and you'll see old looms, tools, and photographs showing what life was actually like when those industries were thriving - proper industrial heritage stuff, not just dusty vitrines.

The collection focuses on local craftspeople and merchants rather than trying to do everything. It's the kind of place where you get a genuine feel for what Bridport was about, how ordinary people worked, and why the town mattered. You'll spend maybe 45 minutes here, an hour if you're genuinely interested in textile history.

This works well for anyone staying at one of the nearby parks - Highlands End, Parkdean West Bay, or Freshwater Beach are all within walking distance. Pop in on a rainy afternoon, or combine it with a wander round Bridport's proper town centre, which has decent independent shops and a farmers market on Wednesdays. The museum also gives you context before you head down to West Bay's cliffs or walk along the Jurassic Coast.

Family groups with older kids will get more from it than toddlers. If you've got under-8s, half an hour is probably your limit. Best to ring ahead about opening hours and admission prices - they change seasonally and it's worth checking before you make the trip into town.
