West Acre Gallery

The converted barn sits quietly just outside King's Lynn, filled with work by artists who actually know their craft. West Acre Gallery isn't the sort of place that'll have queues round the block, which is rather the point - you can breathe here, look properly at things without someone's shoulder in your way.

Inside, the space works brilliantly. High ceilings in what was clearly a serious working farm building, decent natural light, and enough room between pieces that you're not crammed in. The gallery rotates its shows, so what's on depends when you visit - ceramics one month, paintings the next, sometimes mixed work from local Norfolk artists who've got something genuine to say. You're not paying to stand in front of five massive abstract canvases trying to work out what you're supposed to feel.

Give it an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the chatty type and the artist happens to be around. This works best for actual art enthusiasts rather than kids looking to burn energy - though teenagers interested in visual work might surprise you. It's the sort of gallery that makes sense alongside a longer Norfolk stay, not a destination in itself.

The barn location means you're surrounded by proper countryside. If you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa or Happy Valley just down the road, this is worth a morning visit before lunch. King's Lynn centre is close enough if you fancy a proper poke around afterwards. Free or pay-what-you-like on entry, usually - but ring ahead to check current shows and hours, as smaller galleries can be temperamental about opening.
