West Acre All Saints Church

The ruins of All Saints Church stand alone in the Norfolk countryside east of King's Lynn, and there's something genuinely moving about finding it. What remains is mostly the chancel and nave walls - enough to get a real sense of the medieval building without the roof to complete it. You can wander round freely, read the information boards, and spend twenty minutes or so picking out the architectural details: the window tracery, the stonework, the way nature's reclaiming it all.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to history types and anyone who enjoys a quiet walk off the beaten track. Kids won't stay long unless they're into ruins, but walkers heading through the area will find it worth a small detour. No admission charge as far as I can tell, and you can rock up whenever suits you.

If you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa just down the road - probably the nicest option among the nearby parks - you could easily slot this into an afternoon walk. It's a proper Norfolk experience: open countryside, ancient stones, and barely another soul about. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities. Bring a camera and comfortable shoes, give it half an hour, and you'll have a sense of why people bothered building churches in such remote spots centuries ago.
