Went’s Meadow

The River Lugg cuts through this proper little nature reserve with a quiet authority that makes you understand why birdwatchers trek here regularly. Went's Meadow sits just outside Presteigne and rewards those who bother to find it with decent sightings of curlews, lapwings, and if you're lucky, kingfishers darting between the riverside willows.

It's essentially a working wet meadow - the kind of place where conservation matters more than manicured paths. You'll find yourself on basic trails, muddy in winter, occasionally marshy underfoot even in summer. The habitat appeals most to serious naturalists and patient bird enthusiasts rather than casual strollers. Families with young children might find it limited - there's not much to do beyond standing quietly and hoping something interesting flies past.

The reserve is free to access, though facilities are minimal. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested in spotting things; half an hour if you're just passing through. Spring and early summer work best for migrants and breeding birds. Autumn brings passage warblers that keep twitchers entertained.

If you're staying at Rockbridge Park just down the road, it's a handy addition to a walk rather than a destination in itself.
