Wendover Woods

You can feel the elevation the moment you start climbing into Wendover Woods - the Buckinghamshire beech forest rises up properly, and the trees close in around you. It's a genuine woodland experience, not some manicured park job. The forest sits high above Tring, so you get proper views across the Chilterns once you've done the graft to get up there.

There are decent walking trails criss-crossing through the woods, ranging from a gentle amble to something with real climbing involved. Families with younger kids will find gentler loops manageable, though it's not a flat stroll. The beech trees are magnificent, especially in autumn when the colour makes the whole place glow. In summer it's cool and shaded - proper relief on a hot day.

Allowing two to three hours works well if you're planning a half-day outing. Pack a picnic and you've got a spot to sit and let the kids burn off energy among the trees. Walkers and nature types will get far more from this than anyone after a quick visitor attraction fix.

It pairs well with a stay at Hill Farm Camping, just a mile away - you could walk straight into the woods from there. Chiltern Yurts is also close by if you fancy something more glamorous. The woodland sits naturally with the wider Chilterns walking country, so it works as part of a proper hiking holiday rather than a standalone destination.
