Wem Castle Motte

The mound rises abruptly from the Shropshire countryside just outside Wem, a proper reminder that castles weren't always stone affairs. What you're looking at is a Norman motte - that earthwork heap that once held a wooden fortress, probably built sometime in the 11th century. These days it's just grass and history, a conical bump about 40 feet high that takes five minutes to scramble up if you're feeling energetic.

Once you're on top, the views across the surrounding farmland are genuinely worth the climb. On a clear day you can see why the Normans picked this spot - good sightlines, defensible position, and frankly quite pleasant. The site itself is completely free and open at all hours, so you can wander over whenever suits you. Most people spend 15-20 minutes here, which is about right unless you're really into medieval fortifications.

It's the sort of place that appeals more to walkers and history enthusiasts than families with young children - there's no visitor centre, no facilities, no interpretation boards beyond what you bring yourself. That said, it's an easy afternoon detour from Shrewsbury, and works well if you're already exploring the area. Both Hawk Lake Caravan Park and Springfield Riverside are within easy reach, making this a low-effort addition to a broader park-based holiday in Shropshire. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though it can get muddy after rain.
