Wellshurst Golf and Country Club

An 18-hole championship course sitting just outside Hailsham, Wellshurst Golf and Country Club is the sort of place that appeals most to golfers with a decent handicap and time on their hands. The layout winds through Sussex countryside and genuinely tests your game - it's not a casual pitch-and-putt affair. You'll need to book ahead, and membership or green fees apply (check their website for current rates). Allow a full four hours if you're playing the full round.

Non-golfers won't find much to occupy them here, which is worth knowing upfront. The club does have a restaurant and bar, so partners can sit it out with a drink while you're out on the fairways, but it's really a golfer's destination through and through.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Fontmills Farm is barely half a mile away, while Horam Manor and Dernwood Farm are both within two miles - it's a convenient spot to spend a morning or afternoon. The course sits comfortably within reach of other Sussex attractions, so it slots into a park holiday well enough if golf is on your agenda. Weather-dependent, obviously. A wet Sussex autumn can make the course challenging in ways that have nothing to do with par scores.
