Butler's Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, Butler's Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon when exploring the Sussex countryside around Hailsham. It's woodland as it should be - mixed deciduous trees, decent paths through the undergrowth, and genuinely quiet on a weekday morning. You won't find visitor facilities or a visitor centre here; it's just trees and space.

Walkers get the most out of it. The paths are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though muddy patches after rain are genuine mud, not the tamed sort. Budget 45 minutes to an hour if you're doing a proper loop rather than just a quick wander. There's something restorative about it that the more manicured country parks don't quite manage - you're not being shepherded through someone else's vision of nature.

It sits well within a camping holiday in the area. Fontmills Farm Campsite is barely a mile and a half away, making this an obvious choice for a morning walk before breakfast. Warren Wood Country Park and Horam Manor Country Park both offer more structured facilities if you need them, but Butler's Wood itself is free and open - no gates, no admission charges, just woodland.

Go on a grey Sussex day when the light filters through the canopy. Avoid school holidays unless you're after a busier atmosphere. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's exactly what a local woodland should be.
