Wellow Maypole

A wooden pole painted in red and white stripes stands in the middle of Wellow village, just a few miles south of Newark - it's one of England's last surviving traditional maypoles, and honestly, it's the kind of thing you'd walk right past if you didn't know what you were looking at. The pole itself dates back centuries, though it's been restored and repainted more times than anyone can count. It sits in the village green, a proper focal point for the community even if most visitors only stop for five minutes to take a photo.

This is really a pilgrimage for heritage enthusiasts and anyone interested in English folk traditions rather than a destination in itself. Kids might find it mildly interesting - "oh look, a pole" - but they won't stay long. The appeal lies in understanding what it represents: centuries of May Day celebrations, community gatherings, and rural English ritual. It's the sort of thing that makes sense when you're passing through the area rather than a specific reason to drive out.

Being free and accessible at any time of day, it works as a brief stop during a longer Nottinghamshire break. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Center Parcs Sherwood Forest or Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest are close by - you could easily swing through Wellow on a morning walk or bike ride. The Sherwood Forest area itself offers far more to occupy a full day, but this maypole deserves a respectful nod if you're in the neighbourhood. Five minutes, maximum, but worth knowing exists.
