Wellington School Chapel

The chapel at Wellington School is a proper Victorian Gothic building that stops you dead when you walk through the gates. Built in the 1850s, it's all soaring arches, stained glass, and the kind of craftsmanship you don't see much anymore - the sort of place that makes you want to speak in whispers even if nobody's actually there.

It's not a major tourist draw, which is rather the point. This is a working school chapel, so access depends entirely on whether the school's open and feeling hospitable. Best ring ahead or check their website before showing up. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes inside if you do get in - enough time to appreciate the fan vaulting and the light coming through the windows, but not so long you're lingering awkwardly.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the Victorian restoration work and the craftsmanship on display. It's less about the relics and more about understanding how Victorian education valued spirituality and architecture in equal measure. Families with older kids studying the period might find it useful; younger children will probably get restless.

Taunton's just down the road, so if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Waterrow Touring is genuinely excellent, incidentally - you could tack this on after exploring the town centre. It's not a reason to plan a trip around, but if you're in the area and the gates happen to be open, definitely worth fifteen minutes to have a look.
