Willow Cathedral

The Willow Cathedral is one of those places that stops you dead. It's an art installation in Somerset - basically a vast structure made entirely from living willow, woven and trained to create something between a building and a sculpture. You walk inside and suddenly you're surrounded by these pale, flexible branches forming cathedral-like arches overhead. It's genuinely striking, especially when light filters through the gaps.

The experience is quiet and contemplative, which is either brilliant or a bit dull depending on your mood. Kids under about eight might lose interest after twenty minutes, if I'm honest - there's not much to do, just look around and feel impressed by the craft. Older kids and adults will spend longer appreciating how the structure works, how the willow's been shaped over time. It's the sort of thing that rewards a slow wander.

Based near Taunton, it works well as a midweek detour if you're staying at one of the local caravan parks - Cornish Farm Touring Park or Ashe Farm are both within a short drive. The gallery is free to visit, though you'll want to check opening hours before setting off as details online are sparse. Allow thirty to forty minutes unless you're really into land art, in which case give yourself an hour. Go on a dry day if you can - wandering through wet willow loses some of its magic. It's a proper talking point afterwards, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea.
