Wellington Hill

The walk up Wellington Hill rewards you with proper views across the Lea Valley - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see why locals bother with the trek. It's a gentle climb from Chingford, taking about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the summit itself is more of a pleasant woodland knoll than a dramatic peak. You get trees, sky, and the kind of perspective that makes you realise how green this corner of Hertfordshire actually is.

This suits walkers far more than anyone after a quick snap. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no café, no playground, just grassland and forest - though if your lot enjoys a proper ramble it's a solid half-day outing. Historians won't find much here either; it's a straightforward natural viewpoint rather than anything with plaque or legend attached.

It's free, obviously, and you can do the whole thing in under an hour including the view-gazing. Best on a dry day when the paths aren't boggy. Lee Valley Campsite is barely two miles away in Sewardstone, making this an easy add-on if you're based there, or Theobalds Park if you're after something with better facilities. Worth the detour if you're already in the area walking - don't make a special trip just for this.
