Shelly's Hill

The highest point in Hertfordshire isn't what you'd call dramatic. Shelly's Hill, just east of Chingford, peaks at 136 metres - hardly Alpine territory. But that's rather the point. This is a proper Essex borderland walk, the sort of thing you do on a Saturday morning when the weather's decent and you fancy stretching your legs without needing actual climbing boots.

The hill itself is unremarkable from a distance, which is why most people miss it entirely. You'll find it in pleasant countryside that rewards a bit of poking about more than it grabs you by the throat. The views from the top are decent but not show-stopping - you're looking out over rolling fields and the occasional distant church spire rather than panoramic vistas. On a clear day you can pick out landmarks towards London, but it's hardly a destination in itself.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially those exploring the Lee Valley area on foot. The surrounding countryside around Sewardstone and towards the various local parks - Lee Valley Campsite is barely two miles away - makes for a nice half-day circuit. It's the sort of spot you'd visit as part of a bigger ramble rather than a standalone trip. Families won't complain if they're already in the area, but don't expect the kids to be gripped by the drama of it all.

No entry fees, no facilities, no faffing about. Just a gentle walk and a moderately elevated viewpoint. Worth doing if you're camping nearby, skippable if you're passing through.
