Well Wood

A proper woodland walk on the outskirts of Maidstone, Well Wood is the kind of place locals know and visitors miss entirely. The forest floor is thick with leaf mulch, the canopy closes in overhead, and you can actually hear birdsong instead of traffic - which counts for something when you're this close to town.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which means it stays quiet and genuinely wild. You're walking here, mostly along established paths that wind through beech and oak. In spring the bluebells come thick, and in autumn the colours are properly good. It's the sort of woodland where you half-expect to find something interesting - an old stone bridge, a hidden clearing - and sometimes you actually do.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself; it's an add-on to a Maidstone trip or a morning's outing from one of the nearby parks like Chegworth Mill or Oak View. Allow an hour or so, depending on how lost you fancy getting. Free to access, naturally - it's just woods.

Kids will manage it fine if they're properly shod and you don't mind the mud. The paths are easy enough, but there's not much in the way of drama or play equipment, so attention spans might waver. It's better suited to actual walkers than to families looking for a destination activity. In winter it can feel damp and a bit gloomy, but April through October it's worth the detour.
