Weetslade Country Park

You're looking at a proper working country estate that's been opened up for visitors, just inland from Whitley Bay. Weetslade sits on good parkland with open fields, woodland walks, and enough space to actually breathe - which matters when you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks and need to escape the caravan site for an afternoon.

The main draw is the walking. Trails wind through mixed woodland and across grassland, nothing too demanding but enough variety to keep you interested for a couple of hours. There's a working farm element too, so depending on the season you might spot animals about the place. The whole thing has that slightly lived-in feel of a family-run operation rather than a polished visitor attraction, which is either refreshing or underwhelming depending on what you're after.

Walkers will get genuine use out of it. Families with young kids who just want a safe run-around will be fine for an hour, though it's not the sort of place with elaborate play equipment. History types might find the estate buildings interesting enough for a quick look, though there's not much interpretation on site.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay or the Old Hartley Caravan Club site, Weetslade makes a sensible half-day outing - close enough not to eat into your holiday time, far enough away to feel like you've properly got out. Free access and no time pressure means you can potter about without worrying about opening hours or admission costs. Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter.
